Ferrari 458 Italia by Lmomjian Ferrari 458 Italia by Lmomjian
My website ---> www.facebook.com/pages/The-Art…

This drawing was an experiment for me.

My drawings typically take between 50 and 80 hours to complete.  As a young artist who is looking to sell his work, this is a problem because I cannot justify the kind of price for this amount of time.  My goal with this piece was to complete the drawing as fast as possible.  I finished this one in around 45 hours.

What's interesting is that the car only took around half the time - the rest was spent on the background.  In previous drawings I have drawn cars with a bland, showroom-style background (lmomjian.deviantart.com/art/Po…, but I am trying to move away from this simplicity and lack of interest.  Drawing a car is fine, but drawing it an environment gives the piece artistic quality.

To get the background, I took the car and transplanted it into a photo of a garage. Here are the two references I used:

imageshack.com/a/img822/6071/n…
wallautos.com/wp-content/uploa…

I hope to sell this piece in the future.  If you are interested, let me know and I can give you a quote.

If it takes a very long time drawing backgrounds, can't you only draw backgrounds for a week or something so it becomes easy and then you can draw pictures a lot faster!
Just an idea. I don't know if it works ^^'

This is just amazing! I am your huge fan now, haven't come across many who can execute such smooth gradients (body chrome finish). Photorealism!
Thank you for your comment on my art work.
I have a really hard time getting that chrome finish but I guess I am good at giving rough textures. I wanted to know if the drawing sheet you use is very smooth or has some kind of rough texture to it? Also, I have never used mechanical pencils before, does it help?
Thank you for mentioning the materials and tools used, very helpful.
Again, GREAT WORK!
Cheers!

Haha thank you.  The drawing paper I use is very smooth, much smoother than other paper types such as regular drawing paper. I remember when I switched to using bristol, the difference was remarkable.  See if you can pick up some, preferably by the Canson company. Mechanical pencils are another great tool in getting high levels of detail.  If I am shading a large area I use traditional pencils, but for most shading I use the mechanical pencils.  They are invaluable.

Thanks for the comment.

If you didn't say so I wouldn't have noticed you used two different references. Very good job! Although of couse, thinking about it it can be noticed that the car is brighter and more shiny. The only thing I would critisize are the weels. They are not perfectly round but due to your speed that's okay anyway.

To the problem of priece: Try to get commissions. Try to convince people, that you will probably be famous one day. (And guess what - if they start believing you it gets more likely you will!) Don't forget to mention the amount of time.
As time passes by you can increase prieces and I believe you'll receive fair prieces one day. It already works pretty well with me. Actually I get comissions that fluently that I hardly have any time left for my own stuff. I wonder how you manage to spent that much time on drawing actually, it seems you manage to draw more than me. That's an advantage.
You'll probably have to get used to animals, especially horses. It seems drawing commission means drawing horses all the time... Argh.
You could also try to make your own exhibition when you finally have enough artpieces. Unfortunately publicity is important^^

I hope I don't sound like a smartass.

The car looks superb and also the background, but they both dont fit together perfectly, that Ferrari looks too small for the garage.
Or maybe it's just my imagination. Anyway It's a quite impressive work!

You may be right. The background was taken from a this photo: wallautos.com/wp-content/uploa…

The car *is* slightly bigger in that photo than it is in my drawing.

Oh I see, that's what I mean. Well, keep it up, you said you just started developing backgrounds, so
It's a very good result for a start point. Hope this helped you in some way.

Great work, would love to know how you did the texture of the ground.

Thanks.  It was fairly simple - first I put down a dark value for the ground, then used a thin eraser to get large dots of white.  Then I refined the larger dots using a 0.3mm mechanical pencil.  I then put down more highlights a second time.
