Mortal

I decided to draw this photo because it said something to me. The subject, a deserted factory about to be demolished, reminded me of the fragility of life and how we are all - like this building - mortal. Quite a sad piece.

As an artist who aims for realism, typically I follow the reference to the letter. However, the rough, aged textures in this piece would make perfect replication nearly impossible.  I decided to use the reference as a guide rather than a rulebook. While it resulted in a less-than-perfect drawing, it allowed for me to put my own spin on things. For example I designed the cloud format as I saw fit and exaggerated some of the decay effects on the building. A fun change!

I haven't done a graphite piece in several months, so it was great getting back into it. My next piece will be a portrait
