Porsche 911 Turbo by Lmomjian Porsche 911 Turbo by Lmomjian
This is a drawing I did for my uncle for Christmas. He not only sparked my interest in cars, but has always been a huge supporter of my artwork - even before it was all that impressive.

This was drawn and outlined freehand.

This was the first drawing I have done on Strathmore 500 smooth bristol. I found it to be very smooth and fine, but unfortunately it had the tendency to create dark marks of graphite. Next time I will use Canson's bristol.

Halfway through the drawing I purchased two Graph Gear 1000 mechanical pencils to try out.. They are much heavier than the 500's, and have a very large and cumbersome clip. I eventually switched back to the old 500's.

--

Time: 75 h

Materials:
-Strathmore 500 series smooth bristol
-0.3mm Pentel Graph Gear 500 mechanical pencils
-Tombow Mono pencil set
-Papermate Tuff Stuff eraser stick
-Sakura Electric Eraser
-Cretacolor Nero pencils (oily, black and without shine- used for shadows and interior)
-Chalk Pastels (for the background - never again I am doing a background with these. I lost nearly all detail on the outline of the car, and the 7 hours I spent on it were excruciating.)

I was impressed... until I read "freehand". Then I was awestruck. No grid or measurements is absolutely insane. My hat is off to you :)

Great picture. I'm not into cars at all but I appreciate the effort and work that's gone into this. Well done. Was your uncle pleased?

I was looking through your list of materials and did some research on the Tuff Stuff eraser. We can't get them in the UK but you can order one on Amazon (UK)from the US though the postage is over 6. Anyway, the reviews were good so I ordered one.

I've been using a Staedtler Mars Rasor erasing pencil which is actually superb. The rubber insert is very hard and it sharpens well in a pencil sharpener. Great for detail work and I recommend it.

I think artists in general tend to use similar equipment though the manufacturers will differ - I use Derwent pencils and Rotring mechanical pencils - but in the end it's what you are comfortable with.

I've also had an experience with chalk pastels - not as much damage as yours but enough to make me extra careful.

Thank you! Yes, it was a lot of work... it was worth it though. He was very pleased.

I'm glad you found that useful. I couldn't live without that... it is very good for details. I'll have to try that Staedtler eraser... they are a great brand and I use a lot of their materials. I looked for it on Dick Blick (where I get my materials), and they didn't have it. I'll have to try it some time though.

Yup. Derwents are good. And I see that exact concept with mechanical pencils - a lot of people use the Pentel 1000 mechanicals, but I have small hands so they are too heavy and clunky for me.

Chalk pastels are an annoyance to use. I decided to do a pencil background for my next piece. It's the one of the lightbulb. The background took about double the time, but it came out a lot better.

Your life drawings look good! It's funny... I am good at detail work like this, but horrible at life drawings and other quick work. I could use the practice though.

Amazing work. Nothing beats Bristol and graphite, bread and butter. Great drawing, it is hyper-realistic and you should be proud.
